The artist formerly known as Kanye West appeared on Saturday Night Live and once again dropped an album in the process.
Saturday Night Live might have a storage closet full of Emmys, but it might want to collect on some music royalties. For the second time in two years, Kanye West was a musical guest on the show and dropped an album in the process.
Ye, as he now wants the world to know him as, was the musical guest for SNL’s season premiere this weekend and is expected to release Yandhi, his studio album follow-up to 2016’s The Life Of Pablo. Coincidentally, that album was released when Ye was the musical guest for the Valentine’s Day episode of SNL two years ago.
This time around he’s not tying is exclusive to TIDAL, which was the case with TLOP. The album is expected to be made available much sooner on Apple Music and Spotify, but you never really know with Kanye.
Just a few months ago, Ye released Ye which was an EP he worked on at a secluded ranch in Wyoming. The launch party was held around a bonfire with journalists and friends being flown to the remote patch of land. This release is much more modern than that and is a clear sign that Kanye is hoping Yandhi is the type of commercial success he’s used to turning in.
Of course, Kanye has been dubbed problematic for a number of different reasons. Rather than the usual gripes folks have about his bravado and cockiness, much of the criticism about Kanye has focused on his unabashed support of Donald Trump and his alignment with white supremacist views. Kanye may deny that, but his comments on slaves having a choice to be owned are something that continues to not sit well with anyone. He also rocked a MAGA hat in the SNL promos, boasting to a group later that he had essentially remixed it and made it okay to wear.
None of this hurt the critical assessment of Ye, but Kanye stayed away from getting too political on it. The same doesn’t seem to be the case for Yandhi and things are likely about to get very interesting — as they usually do with the artist formerly known as Kanye West.
