Democrats battling to win control of the state Senate are sending out mailers linking their Republican opponents in competitive races to the conservative bogeyman — President Trump.
The offensive comes days after Republicans sent out mail to voters in suburban districts associating their Democratic opponents to the actions of Mayor de Blasio.
One mailer paid for by the New York State Senate Democratic Committee shows a picture of Bob Antonacci, who’s running for an open seat in the Syracuse region’s 50th district, with Trump.
Antonacci, currently the Onondaga County comptroller, was considered for an appointment last year to become the US Attorney for the Northern District. He didn’t get the job and is now running for state Senate.
“Just last year, Bob Antonacci wanted a job with Donald Trump. Central New York doesn’t need a Trump loyalist in the State Senate,” the mailer says.
Teacher John Mannion is the Democratic candidate for the open seat.
Senate GOP spokesman Scott Reif said the Dems were grasping at straws.
“It’s not surprising that the Senate Democrats would focus on what’s happening in Washington, DC, because they can’t argue with a straight face that their own agenda would be good for New York,” Reif said.
Republicans hold a 32-31 majority in the Senate.
